A few days back I expressed some mock-concern over Washington D.C.'s superhuman crime rate (as reflected on select covers), but really...our trip to our nation's capital has been a wonderful experience so far. As I write this, it's Friday evening and we're all winding down after another busy day of sightseeing. Here's a few photos of our adventures so far (click on each to enlarge).
Left: The spectacular view from atop of the Washington Monument. The Lincoln Memorial is in the background, with the new World War II Memorial in the foreground.
Middle: The gang and I at the Lincoln Memorial. A truly profound experience (something I've been looking forward to for many, many years).
Right: Our visit to the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Yet another profound experience, with intermingled sadness and gratitude.
Left: Loitering in front of the White House.
Right: About to dig into a "Dinosaur Donut" (a Washington D.C original) at Union Station.
Left: Dwarfed by a massive jet engine at the National Air and Space Museum.
Middle: My kids with a good natured U.S. astronaut.
Right: At the U.S. Capitol building. We also went on a fascinating tour of the interior, which included one of the highlights of the entire trip: the spectacular rotunda. Unbelievably cool.
As the title said, so far, so good. What an amazing place to visit...with so much history and lofty idealism packed into a relatively small area.
Nice post, Mark. When I lived in DC (for a year), I must have visited the Lincoln Memorial about twenty times. Never lost its power.

Were there any nutty protestors in Lafayette Park when you visited the White House?

Nope...no nutty protestors. However, there was a small group shooting a movie with a young boy actor. Looked like a pretty low-budget affair.
